How does a DR Strategy work?

Disaster recovery depends on having a solid plan to get critical applications and infrastructure up and running after an outage, ideally within minutes.

An effective disaster recovery plan addresses three different elements to recovery:

Preventative: Ensuring your systems are as secure and reliable as possible, using tools and techniques to prevent a disaster from happening in the first place. This may include backing up critical data or continually monitoring environments for configuration errors and compliance violations.

Detective: For a quick recovery, you will need to know when a response is necessary. These measures focus on detecting or discovering unwanted events as they occur in real time.

Corrective: These measures are intended to plan for possible disaster recovery scenarios, ensure backup operations to reduce the impact, and implement recovery procedures to quickly restore data and systems when the time comes.

Typically, disaster recovery involves securely replicating and backing up critical data and workloads to a secondary location or to multiple locations – disaster recovery sites. A disaster recovery site can be used to recover data from the most recent backup or from an earlier time. Organizations can also switch to using a disaster recovery site if the primary location and its systems fail due to an unforeseen event until the primary is restored.
